This free, drop-in program includes a story time with Morningside University Spanish Club reading “Dia de Muertos Números – A Day of the Dead Counting Book,” and a hands-on activity where children can learn about and help build a traditional ofrenda (Day of the Dead altar). Visitors will also have the opportunity to create papel picado, a symbolic, decorative banner for Day of the Dead, that will be used in the exhibit space.
Perfect for preschoolers and early elementary kids (but everyone’s welcome!), this playful hour is packed with hands-on activity stations, crafts to make and take, and a fun gallery activity.
Grown-ups and kids learn and explore together—no need to register, just stop by!
The Sioux City Public Museum and Sergeant Floyd River Museum will participate in Downtown Sioux City’s Fall Fest, on October 11 and 12, with activities for the whole family.
Kids’ Saturday: Get Ready for Day of the Dead will be held on October 11, from 10 to 11 a.m. This free, drop-in program includes a story time and a hands-on activity where children can learn about and help build a traditional ofrenda (Day of the Dead altar). Visitors will also have the opportunity to create papel picado, a symbolic, decorative banner for Day of the Dead, that will be used in the exhibit space. Activities are designed for preschool and early-elementary-aged children, but all are welcome to join the fun.
The scavenger hunt and papel picado activity will be available all day on October 11 and 12.
The Sergeant Floyd River Museum & Welcome Center will also participate in Fall Fest on October 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a scavenger hunt inside the boat. When children complete the scavenger hunt, they can choose a small pumpkin or gourd as a prize while supplies last.

The Sioux City Public Museum honors Day of the Dead with a day of celebration, including music, dancing, refreshments, face painting, and children’s crafts. The Museum also hosts an exhibit of Day of the Dead Altars, created by community members and on display October 21-November 2.
This year’s theme is El Aire Que Nos Une (The Air That Unites Us). The celebration will be held October 26, 2025, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Sioux City Public Museum. This event is free to attend.
