A state lawmaker in the Iowa Legislature died earlier this year, so an unanticipated special election is underway or people in part of Woodbury County.
The special election for the Iowa Senate District 1 seat is needed because of the late June death of state senator Rocky DeWitt, a Republican of Lawton, at age 66. DeWitt first held office as a member of the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors, then moved to the state Legislature a few years ago after winning that election.
Early voting is underway, and on election day on August 26, polls will be open from 7 am to 8 pm.
This What’s The Frequency Show is devoted to the Iowa Senate District 1 special election. The process to pick nominees for the ballot from the Republican and Democratic parties involve special nominating conventions that lasted about an hour, where county party officials settled on nominees.
The Republican nominee is Christopher Prosch, a Sioux City man who runs a media consulting firm.
As for the Democrat in the state senate race, Catelin Drey was selected.
Drey is an account supervisor at Antidote 71 and founder of Moms for Iowa, a grassroots initiative aimed at making public policy accessible to Iowans. Her platform focuses on public education, accessible child care, economic equity, and bodily autonomy.
For this show, we originally planned to have the show be roughly half the time with each nominee. Prosch initially said he would take part in an interview, but then never confirmed a time to carry that out.
A Woodbury County Republican Party release said Prosch understands the challenges facing hardworking Iowans.
“We are confident that Christopher will be a strong advocate for economic growth in our State because he understands the negative impact government overreach and overregulation has had on our economy,” the release said.
