This special episode of What's The Frequency going to downtown Sioux City to have a live, broad discussion on the Sioux City International Film Festival.

That festival has been going since 2005, and each year has showcased a variety of independent short films from all around the world.
This year, as in many recent years, Siouxland Public Media has aired an hour-long show to talk with the main organizers and also the filmmakers, actors, and others involved in producing films that run from feature films to shorts.

To get a flavor of how the Sioux City International Film Festival started in 2005, we spoke with board members Leslie Werden and Greg Giles, plus curator Adam Gonshorowski.

Others who shared their time included people vitally involved in the making of three films, with Chelsea Bo, Sean Drummond, and actor Ava Acres for the drama "No Right Way," filmmakers Dan Bricker and Eytan Millstone, who created the dark comedy "Steps," and also "Surrender to the Sound," by Madee Sabatier. That film is about the super fans of the Angel City FC’s women’s soccer team, dubbed ‘La Fortaleza,’ as they devotedly take on their second inaugural season.

Sioux City International Film Festival events run from October 3 to 6, and began with a screening of the feature film, “No Right Way,” which was written and directed by Bo.

Actor Ava Acres, Writer and Director Chelsea Bo, and Producer Sean Drummond speak with Siouxland Public Media about their film "No Right Way," which is part of the October 2024 Sioux City International Film Festival.

The synopsis for "No Right Way" is that Georgie, a brazen 13-year-old, has her life uprooted when she’s thrust into the guardianship of her half-sister Harper and torn away from her life in Las Vegas. Harper sees this turbulent time as a window of opportunity to pave a brighter future for her half-sister in Los Angeles, but Harper’s self-righteous attempts to protect Georgie only lead to exposing their paralleled childhood wounds. Bo portrays Harper, and actor Acres is Georgie.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, films will be shown all day at two screens of the ACX Promenade Theatres in downtown Sioux City. Those will be in two-hour blocks, and in various genres, such as comedy, documentary, drama, Upper Midwest Student films, and horror/thriller/sci-fi.

On Saturday evening, the film chosen as “Best of the Fest” will be screened, and there will be awards presentations.

Cash prizes and trophies will be given to the juried selections. Audience Choice winners receive a certificate and the overall audience favorite receives a Siouxette trophy.
