Ways To Subscribe

There was a primary election in Sioux City on Tuesday, selecting six candidates out of nine to advance to the November ballot for three Sioux City Council seats.

Voters selected Craig Berenstein, Rick Bertrand, Ike Rayford, Marty Pottebaum, John Den Beste, and Paul Koskovich as the top six candidates to move forward.

In the primary election, the results are as follows: Craig Berenstein received 2,114 votes at 18 percent, Rick Bertrand with 1,811 votes at 15 percent, and Ike Rayford 1,615 votes at 14 percent.

The other three candidates selected to move forward were Marty Pottebaum, receiving 1,500 votes at 13 percent, Paul Koskovich with 1,274 votes at 11 percent, and John Den Beste with 1,236 votes at 10 percent.

A primary election is required one month before the November general election for the city council due to a large field of candidates narrowing it down to six candidates.

Candidates not moving forward are Jessica Lopez-Walker, Brett Watchorn, and Nick Davidson.

The November 4 election in Sioux City and elsewhere in Iowa will have city council and school board election contests, plus a few school bond issue referendums.

Additionally, there will be two candidates forums on Wednesday evening by the Sioux City League of Women Voters at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City.

The first forum for the Sioux City School Board candidates begins at 5:45 p.m., with Bret Hayworth of Siouxland Public Media News as one of the panelists.

The second forum for the six Sioux City Council candidates begins at 7:30 p.m. Linda Santi of SPM is a panelist for that portion.

People who attend the forums will be able to pose possible questions for the candidates.
