Republican Skaff ousts boss Gill to win Woodbury County Auditor post, Republicans sweep county

There is a big change in the Woodbury County Auditor position, as a deputy in the office has defeated her boss, who had held the position for 28 years.

Republican Michelle Skaff defeated seven-term Democratic Auditor Pat Gill in Tuesday voting.

Skaff got 54 percent of the vote, with 22,346 ballots cast for her.

In Woodbury County, there were four other contests for elective office, with Sheriff Chad Sheehan being unopposed in winning a second term.

Additionally, of the five positions of the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors, three were before voters, and Republicans won them all to continue a stranglehold of all the positions.

Two current county supervisors will leave office at the end of the year, with those exiting being Keith Radig and Jeremy Tayor.

The Woodbury County Supervisor District 3 race was the only supervisors contest with an incumbent, with that being Republican Mark Nelson, who defeated Democrat Brian McNaughton.

Nelson got 62 percent of votes.

There is an interesting wrinkle in that race, as Nelson had already defeated McNaughton once, back in June in a Republican primary election. But a few weeks later, McNaughton switched to the Democratic Party, so they were pitted in a rematch.

In the Woodbury County Board of Supervisor races, for the District 1 spot, Republican Kent Carper defeated Democrat John Herrig, by nabbing 60 percent.

In the Woodbury County Supervisor District 5 race, Republican David Dietrich was victorious over Democrat Lincoln Ryan. Dietrich, who like Carper is a first-time county officeseeker, received 62 of the vote.

Woodbury County 15 years ago was an evenly split county in terms of voter registration, but now Republicans lead Democrats in registered voters by more than 7,000.
